Situated on a hillside and ridgetop in the cool “deep end” of the Anderson Valley, The Narrows is a historic mountain ranch planted with mature Pinot Noir vines. The site consistently yields complex, age-worthy wines that strike a balance between rusticity and sophistication. This almost “Old World” sensibility has always been one the The Narrows’ defining qualities. To spotlight this thoughtful mineral-and-earth expression of Pinot Noir, this wine was made from old Wente and Martini clone grapes grown in thin, challenging soils on the vineyard’s exposed ridgetop.

Winemaker Notes
Easily one of the most aromatic of our 2010 Pinot Noirs, this wine demands your attention with a high-toned nose of cool blue and red fruit and spice. Sweet red cherry and wild berry flavors attack the palate, accentuated by a dash of cinnamon on the mid-palate. The finish is savory and substantial with ripe tannins and notes of porcini. Polished, complex and wonderfully sophisticated, this is the essence of cool-climate Pinot Noir grown on the viticultural edge.
Production
The season began with a wet winter and spring. Despite rain and cool temperatures we had a window of good weather during bloom, and saw little-or-no shatter. Overall, we set a normal crop load of approximately 2.0-2.5 tons per acre. We chose not to do any substantial leaf stripping. As a result, we saw almost no sun damage during a heat event in late August. This ideal hot weather allowed the vines to focus on ripening. Harvest began on September 15, and we picked our Estate vineyards block by block over five weeks. While the Brix were a little lower than normal, we always pick in a spectrum of Brix for added complexity, and all our fruit was in the preferred range. Overall, the 2010 vintage produced great color, fantastic aromatics and balanced acids, all with the fleshy structure and texture that are hallmarks of great Anderson Valley Pinot Noir.

This Golden Eye Narrows Vineyard is an intensely elegant and sophisticated top drawer Pinot. Intense red cherry on the nose and endless rose pedal, raspberry and spice flavors flow endlessly through the palate into a long, stunning, red licorice finish. Sandy and savored every sip of this wine last night …..and thought just maybe we had simply died and wound up in Pinot heaven. Hats off to the Goldeneye team (again).
